Dover, Del. (Feb. 13, 2010) --- Marcus Neal led all players with 17 points, while Frisco Sandidge added 14 to lead Delaware State to a 67-50 win over Bethune-Cookman, and complete a season sweep of the Wildcats in Memorial Hall Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets won their second straight to improve to 13-9 overall and 8-3 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). DSU was tied for second place in the MEAC entering the contest. Bethune-Cookman dropped its second straight to fall to 14-11 and 6-5.
"I was pleased with our overall effort against a good basketball team," said Delaware State head coach Greg Jackson. "We were prepared for a tough contest after winning at their place last month. Marcus and Frisco are providing the senior leadership we expect from them, and Jay (Threatt) did a great job of distributing the ball."
Threatt had a career-high 10 assists and just two turnovers in the contest. He was tied for the MEAC lead in assist-to-turnover ratio entering the game.
Kevin Dukes was high scorer for the Wildcats with 12 points, while teammate Alexander Starling had a game-high 11 rebounds.
Bethune-Cookman led 25-22 before Delaware State took control of the game. The Hornets outscored the Wildcats 13-2 in the last 5:27 of the first half to hold a 35-27 lead at the break.
Delaware State was 12-for-19 from the field (63.2%), including 5-of-7 from three-point territory in the first half.
The Wildcats opened the second half with back-to-back three pointers to pull to within 35-33.
Delaware State scored six of the next seven points, and opened up a 41-34 lead on a jumper by Threatt with 16:44 left to play.
The Hornets stretched their lead to 61-43 when Threatt capped off a 12-2 run on a lay up with 5:26 left. Neal had five points during the spurt.
Delaware State led by as many as 19 in the last two minutes.
The Hornets were 26-for-44 from the field (59.1), including 7-of-13 from beyond the arc for the game.
DSU returns to action against Florida A&M at home Monday evening. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Bethune-Cookman travels to Maryland-Eastern Shore for its next outing Monday evening.
