Raleigh, N.C. (Apr. 19, 2013) --- The Delaware State University women's tennis team fell short in its bid for a third straight appearance in the MEAC Tournament semifinals. The Hornets, seeded third in the MEAC North, were upended by No. 2 South seed North Carolina Central 4-2 in a tournament quarterfinal contest at the Millbrook Tennis Center today.
DSU won two of the three doubles matches, but captured just one of the five completed singles contests to fall from the tournament.
All-MEAC First Team selection Brittany Marshall (sr.) recorded the Hornets' lone singles victory, defeating NCCU's Brianna Gatson 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 6 contest.
Marshall also teamed with Marina Sicic to post an 8-0 victory in No. 3 doubles.
Delaware State's Vanja Andonova and Ksenia Kozlova were winners 8-5 winners in the No. 2 doubles match.
The loss ended the Hornets' spring season with a 15-6 overall record. The win total was the second-best spring mark in team history, one short of the school record 16 in 2012.
The 2012-13 Delaware State tennis season was also highlighted by a second place finish in the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Championship last fall. It was Delaware State's first appearance in the HBCU championship.
Four Hornets earned HBCU All-America recognition during the event.
