Dover, Del. (Jan. 9, 2013) --- The Delaware State University women's tennis team has been picked to finish second in the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division race, according to a poll of league head coaches and sports information representatives.
The Hornets, 2012 MEAC Northern champs, collected eight of 26 first place votes and 251 total points in the 2013 division poll. Howard is the voters' choice to win this year's division race, garnering 14 first place votes and 272 points.
Delaware State captured its first MEAC Northern Division crown with a 5-0 league record last season. The Hornets won a school-record 16 games in 2012 (16-2 overall). The season was highlighted by a team-record 16 game win streak.
The Hornets return five of its top six players from the 2012 squad, including reigning MEAC Rookie-of-the-Year Vanja Andonova (so.).
During last fall's exhibition season, Delaware State finished a close second among 20 teams in its first appearance at the Historically Black Colleges & Universities National Tennis Invitational.
Four Hornets earned HBCU All-America recognition during the event. Ksenia Kozlova (so.) and Brittany Marshall (fr.) were honored for their performances in singles and doubles competition, while Andonova (so.) and Marina Sicic (sr.) were recognized for their doubles play.
