DOVER, Del. - Football freshman Dae-Hon Cheung (Coatesville, Pa.) and women's soccer senior Kelsey Gibson (Elizabethtown, N.Y.) were
named Monday the Delaware State University student-athletes of the week.
Playing
in just his fourth collegiate game, Cheung rushed for a career-high 135 yards
and two touchdowns on 18 carries in the Hornets' MEAC opening 22-24 loss to
Florida A&M Saturday at Alumni Stadium.
His total was the most by a DSU freshman since Terrance Hoover ran for 160
yards vs. North Carolina A&T in 1984.
Cheung's rushing yards were also the most by any Hornet since Jaashawn
Jones had 144 vs. the Aggies in 2010.
The
DSU football team takes this coming weekend off before traveling to reigning
MEAC Champion Norfolk State on October 6.
Gibson
scored her first career goal Friday in the Hornets double overtime tie against
Rider at Alumni Stadium. In the 58th
minute, the midfielder was able to take advantage of an empty net as fellow senior
Candace Wyre (Smyrna, Del.) got tangled up with the Rider goalie around the
12-yard-line. Gibson's goal was the
second of the game for DSU to tie the things at the eventual end score of 2-2.
The
Hornet women's soccer team returns to action Thursday evening at Alumni Stadium
with a 7 p.m. start against Goldey-Beacom.
